Margrit Hadden

Marge Hadden was elected on April 9, 2013 and is serving her first term on City Council serving the residents of District 4.

Purpose and Goals

Marge feels her goals are realistic and achievable, which include:
  • Keeping Newark safe, clean and green;
  • Maintaining the integrity of residential neighborhoods;
  • Building relations between UD and the city; and
  • Working with the Mayor and other members of Council to promote effective government for the welfare of the community.

Marge has lived on Sunset Road since 1986 with her husband, Robert Newlin, a Newark native and graduate of Newark High School. They have four adult children (Marge’s stepchildren) and 11 grandchildren.

Work Experience

Marge has been employed at UD since 1974 and has held positions in facilities, personnel, science, education and most recently marketing. She served as an elected representative for UD nonexempt staff to bring issues and concerns to the attention of the administration, and held the position for over 15 years; she stepped down from this role when she began on City Council to devote her time to Newark community concerns. Marge has served on several UD committees including the Grievance Procedure Advisory Committee and Board, the Diversity Commission and the Nonexempt Staff Advisory Council.

Marge is currently a member of—and has served on the Board of Directors of—the Newark Historical Society; and is a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post 7687.

Since her time on City Council, Marge has taken classes in support of a certificate in Local Government Leadership from the University of Delaware Institute for Public Administration, and has earned a Coastal Community Resilience certificate from the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium.

Marge graduated from Bohemia Manor High School in Maryland, and has taken university courses during her employment. She also has participated in various workshops including project management, communication, Six Sigma, process improvement and team building.
